Guidelines for Authors

General Information for Authors

  • All authors to check their research work article for plagiarism before submission. Papers that have unacceptable levels of similarity (>10%)will be rejected in preliminary screening and desk review. Also, authors should take care to keep single source similarity levels to a minimum (< 1%) while submitting articles. Further, AI Check is mandatory, and the AI content shall be within the permissible limits (<20%).

  • Authors should take adequate care to submit articles pertaining to open domain and unclassified content is submitted with acceptably good levels of formal English grammar and usage. It is recommended that grammar and spelling checks are carried out prior to submission of article to ensure improved readability and comprehension for readers, open-source tools available may be utilised.

  • Article word count is recommended to be about 3500 words. The recommended word count for Book Review and Book Brief are 1000 words and 75 words respectively.

  • The author may include all diagrams, tables, graphs and figures as deemed necessary duly annotated, sequentially numbered and citing the summary or reference in the main text of the article. The content of diagrams, tables, graphs and figures if accepted from earlier research work or from other sources, due acknowledgement and citation is to be mandatorily included. The author shall highlight the analysis and insights drawn from the research work carried out. The outcomes of the research are required to be clearly enumerated with supporting data and the discussion on research relevance to be included.

  • If the article consists of diagrams, figures, tables or data accepted from other sources, then details of permissions for such use obtained from original author or authority of source is recommended to be included invariably by the author. Declaration to this effect shall be enclosed by the author along with article submission.

  • The author shall disclose all credentials such as personal and professional details. Further, conflicts related to the article if any and a declaration that same article is not submitted for publication by other authorities concurrently be intimated to the Editorial Board along with the submission.

  • Details of third-party data used for research work are to be clearly stated. Anonymous data and unknown sources are not recommended for acceptance. All the sources in the research work article are to be attributed.

  • In case of any similar research work carried out to augment the relevance of current article are to be cited.

  • The author shall adhere accepted ethical standards whilst conducting the research work and the rationale leading to the paper to be highlighted as the research gap identified.

  • The author is bound to intimate the Editorial Board if any ethical obligation exists and in case of any commissions or omissions with respect to above stipulated terms and clauses.

  • The Editorial Board will screen the research work articles with due diligence and if non-adherence to terms and clauses or any error is noticed, the Editorial Board will exercise discretion to reject an article for publication. Editorial decisions shall be final and details will be communicated to the author via e-mail.

  • The Editorial Board is mandated to amend the article to enhance the quality of article to meet the Journal’s standards of presentation and style, whilst retaining the essence of the research work. Further, the Editorial Board reserves rights to query the author in case of any ambiguity. The author shall not raise any objections to the amends carried out by the Editorial Board.

Style Sheet

  • General Formatting.
  • Paper Size: A4.
  • Font: Times New Roman 11 (Microsoft Word).
  • Line Spacing: 2 for Centre Heading, 15 for main body text (Font Arial, size 14) and 1.15 for side/ paragraph headings (Font Arial, size 12). Footnotes and references in font size 8/9 and Italics.
  • Columns: Two column format of 3.5 inches column width each and gap of 0.25 inches.
  • Margins: 1 inch on all sides (to be incorporated in final stage of publishing).
  • Alignment: Left aligned for articles; Centered for headings and title.
  • Page Numbers: Mirrored at outer top corner for odd & even pages, auto numbering.
  • Language: English (British English – Oxford spelling).
  • Paragraphs will not be numbered.

  • Structure of Submission.
  • Title of the article in Times New Roman, 12 bold, centered.
  • Author’s name, designation, affiliation, email.
  • Footnote for acknowledgements or disclosures (if any).

  • Size of Articles.
  • Articles should be 3000 – 3500 words.
  • Abstract of 150 words summarising objective, methods, findings, and relevance.
  • Keywords, placed below the abstract.

  • Main Text – Research Paper Article.
  • Introduction (includes Problem Statement & Research Questions).
  • Aim (one small para).
  • Review of Literature (includes Research Gap, Theories, methods used in earlier researches, Theoretical & Conceptual Framework evolved, Hypothesis, if any).
  • Research Methodology (including Research Design, one small para).
  • Results/ Findings.
  • Analysis and Discussion.
  • Limitations and Future Scope.
  • References and about Author.

  • Main Text – Essay.
  • Title (concise, engaging and reflective of the core argument or theme).
  • Introduction (contextualizes the topic and establishes relevance).
  • Background / Contextual Overview (relevant developments or debates. Sets the stage for the core discussion.
  • Core Argument / Thematic Sections (analysis of core issue, counterarguments and Synthesis or deeper implications.
  • References and about the Author.

  • Style and Tone.
  • Formal academic tone using third-person and passive voice.
  • Avoid personal pronouns like “I”, “we” unless it is a first-person reflection piece.
  • Expand all abbreviations at first mention.
  • Referencing and Citation Style (follows APA format).
  • Books: Sharma, R. (2020). “Leadership in Defence Management.” New Delhi: Sage Publ.

  • Figures, Tables and Illustrations.
  • All figures/ tables must be numbered and cited in text.
  • Use MS Word native tables; titles above tables, sources below.
  • Submit images separately in JPEG (1–5 MB).
  • Use footnotes sparingly (11 pt font).
  • Number consecutively. For example, ² Singh, R. (2018). Military Strategy and Planning. New Delhi: Defence Press, p. 112.

  • Supplementary Materials.
  • Author Passport Size Photo: JPEG (1–5 MB).
  • Bio-data: Max 4 lines (designation, expertise, institution).
  • Declaration of originality (signed and scanned) as per guidelines to authors.

  • Book Reviews and Letters to the Editor.
  • Book Reviews: Max 500 words, with title, author, publisher, year, ISBN, and cover photo. Main text sections as per content of the book.
  • Letters to Editor: Max 500 words, relevant and constructive.
  • Font and formatting as mentioned above.

  • Editorial Rights and Copyright.
  • Editorial Board reserves the right to edit or reject submissions.
  • All accepted works are intellectual property of CDM.
  • Honoraria may be awarded for select publications as per SOP of DMJ.
  • Authors will receive e-certificate and journal copy.

Submission Checklist

  • Please check if the following documents are prepared before proceeding to the Submissions page: –
  • Covering Letter, briefly explaining that research work article being submitted is relevant and its suitability to be included in the Defence Management Journal.
  • Article, Tittle suitably worded, Abstract and Keywords as per the word count limits. The document shall contain the names and affiliations of all authors.
  • The article is compiled with all relevant data, tables and figures, they are numbered and inserted in text sequentially affording smooth flow of readability. Adequate citations have been included and attributed. The author shall ensure that the tables, figures and diagrams are clearly readable.
  • The author shall attach appendices as relevant, consisting of additional data, questionnaires figures and tables, etc. which are integral part of research and not included in main body of the article.
  • Author Declaration Form and adhering to ethical standards.

  • Submission Timelines and Contact.
  • 01 March for June issue, 01 Jun for September Issue, 01 September for December Issue and 01 December for March Issue.

Maj Gen Harsh Chhibber, AVSM, VSM, Ph.D.

COMMANDANT

An alumnus of the prestigious National Defence Academy, Major General Harsh Chhibber was commissioned into the Army Service Corps in December 1988. His distinguished career is marked by academic excellence, steering technology absorption and a passion for adventure.
Throughout his service, he has consistently demonstrated exceptional academic prowess. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) on Public Policy along with two M.Phil degrees in Business Management and Public Administration. His dedication to professional development is further evidenced by his qualifications on the Technical Staff Officers Course(TSOC), Higher Defence Management Course (HDMC), and the Advanced Professional Programme in Public Administration (APPPA).
Major General Chhibber’s military experience is vast and encompasses various important assignments in Eastern, Northern and Western Sectors including command of the Para ASC company, an ASC Battalion and the ASC training Centre. He has been Brigadier General Staff (Information System) in Eastern Sector and Major General (Operational Logistics) in Northern Sector. He has also served as an instructor at the Army Service Corps Centre and College and as the Directing Staff and Head of the Financial Management Department at College of Defence Management.

A prolific writer he has written many papers on technology absorption in Indian Army and presented same at National Seminars. Software applications developed and implemented by him are in use in a large number of units.
Beyond his academic and military achievements, General officer is a passionate adventurer. A skilled skydiver, mountaineer and car rally driver, he exemplifies the spirit of courage and determination that defines the Indian Army.
His distinguished service has been recognized through numerous awards including Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) on 26 Jan 2025, Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) on 26 Jan 2022, the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Card, and the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Commendation Cards (twice). On 01 Oct 2024, the General Officer was appointed Colonel Commandant of Army Service Corps.
Currently, he holds the prestigious appointment of Commandant of the College of Defence Management (CDM), effective June 1, 2024.  His vast experience and leadership qualities make him well-positioned to guide future generations of military leaders.
